The invention of the wristwatch, at or the time, ‘portable clocks’ first came about during the late 16th century. Back then, they were primarily worn by women only, as men often used pocket watches instead.

However, this all changed in the early 20th century, when military men started wearing them during battle. Following on from the war, the idea of men wearing wristwatches for everyday use quickly took heed.

Since then, there have been a number of significant developments, particularly in the reasoning behind wearing a watch. Originally, watches were only really used as a way of telling time. But then, as the 20th century advanced, so did we. Watches were no longer being viewed as just another helpful tool. They were now being seen as a fashion accessory.

Today, people wear watches for a few different reasons. While the number one reason is probably still to tell the time, it’s no longer as vital as it was back in the early 20th century as today we have a whole host of digital accomplices for that. These days, a lot of wearing a watch is about making a statement as to who you are as a person. It lets you express yourself as an individual and gives others a glimpse of what’s under the exterior.

Just the same as with clothes, shoes, or any other accessories you use on a daily basis, different styles suit different personalities, and it’s simply a case of finding what’s out there to best suit yours. In this article, we’ll go through some of the things to consider when making your purchase, including different styles, features, and which are the hottest brands right now.

Choosing Your Statement Watch

The right statement watch can transform any outfit instantly as these are quite extravagant items and expensive items. In addition to making you look and feel great, they also make good conversation pieces and can be a great way to ‘break the ice’ in a variety of situations. A lot of choosing the right statement watch for you comes down to your individual personality and the way you want to express yourself. Here are some of the things to consider when making your selection:

  • Casing: The casing of a watch refers to the outer structure that protects the inner mechanisms. It’s one of the most prominent parts of the watch, so this needs to be considered as a priority. Most statement watches have a metal casing, with the most popular choices being stainless steel, titanium, and solid gold. Stainless steel is a popular choice as is excellent when it comes to resisting tarnishing and discoloration. Titanium is also a very durable metal but not quite as heavy in weight, therefore feels much lighter on your wrist. While solid gold is always a great choice. Not only does it ooze luxury, but it’s also hard-wearing and very good at resisting tarnishing. Some statement watches also have a ceramic casing. Another good choice is both robust and highly scratch-resistant.
  • Band and clasp: Along with the casing, the band and clasp are two more areas that require a lot of attention when making your choice. There are two main types of watch band: those that are made up of interlocking links, usually of the same metal as that of the case, or those of a solid band type, that can be made from a range of materials including leather, fabric, and rubber. It’s also worth considering the clasp here too as the two invariably go together as one piece. Some consist of a simple push button that releases the clasp when pushed. While others have a kind of hook latch that you can lock into place. Watchband made of leather or fabric will usually have a buckle clasp.
  • Dial: Another highly important aspect to consider is the dial type. The dial is the showcase of your watch and is the part where people’s eyes will be drawn to first. Therefore, you need to ensure it correctly gives off the right look for you. Most high-end statement watches are analog. It’s extremely unlikely you’ll find a digital one. With that in mind, things to consider are the individual features you’d like to see on your dial. Chronograph watches are a popular choice right now. These watches are quite technical and usually feature at least one sub-dial.
  • Crystal: This is the part of the watch that protects the face while allowing you to still see the dial underneath. The type of crystal used will vary across different watch models. When it comes to statement watches, the most common crystal material is sapphire and mineral. Sapphire crystal is used a lot as is super scratch-resistant and can be treated quite easily to reduce glare. Mineral glass is also used quite regularly in statement watches. However, it’s not quite as tough or scratch-resistant as sapphire and can crack under extreme conditions.

Popular Statement Watch Bands

Statement watches are hot right now, with some brands flying high above the rest in terms of both quality, and popularity. One such manufacturer included in this bunch is an age-old name that’s been around for more than 100 years, and that’s Rolex. These watches have been making an impression on the world for a long time and are now regarded as some of the finest in the industry. Stand out from the crowd with a Rolex.

Hublot is another luxury watchmaker that’s extremely popular right now. While this brand has only been around since the 1980’s it’s quickly gained traction in the industry offering luxury timepieces for those who can afford it. The company has also been involved heavily in various sponsorship deals throughout the years, including some with the likes of Manchester United, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2011. Now you can see why it’s not hard to make a statement with a Hublot watch.

Two more brands offering fantastic statement watches are Breitling, and Tag Heuer. Both are Swiss luxury watchmakers that have been around since the 1800’s and both are very popular choices. While Breitling watches are often of the diving or aviation sort, most Tag Heuer watches are chronographs, as this is where their forte lies.
