BRUTAL BEACH

In this editorial feature, we aim to highlight the extraordinary talent and diverse perspectives of these three local designers. Their unique backgrounds, creative processes, and dedication to sustainability and inclusivity make them exemplary role models in the fashion world.

Designer 1: Camilla Leonelli Calzado
Camilla Leonelli Calzado, a recent graduate of the TMU fashion design program, stands out for her exploration of the intersections of textiles, decolonization, and sustainability. Her research into historical dress practices in colonial Cuba brings a rich cultural narrative to her designs. Camilla’s work is driven by a commitment to challenging stereotypes and promoting diversity in the fashion industry. Her deep appreciation for her Afro-Caribbean heritage is evident in her designs, making her an inspiring advocate for social change through fashion.

Designer 2: Jenny Trúc Uyên Chung
Jenny Trúc Uyên Chung’s passion for sustainable fashion and luxury knitwear shone brightly during our photo shoot. We showcased her “Flora” collection, a testament to her talent in machine knitting and natural yarn dyeing techniques. Her dedication to sustainability and conscious design was a recurrent theme throughout our interview, aligning perfectly with Fashion Canada’s mission to promote mindful consumption in the fashion world.

Designer 3: Chizoba Udeh-Martin (ZOBA MARTIN)
Chizoba Udeh-Martin, a Nigerian-born artist and designer, is the founder of ZOBA MARTIN, a luxury fashion brand in Toronto. She’s known for creating custom hyper-flattering garments for special events, emphasizing body positivity. Chizoba’s expertise in pattern making and working with unconventional materials has earned her media recognition and numerous awards.
