Fabien Zou Unveils His New Collection “Mofwazé”: An Invitation Into the Creator’s Metamorphosis

At Paris Fashion Week, Fabien Zou revealed his latest collection, “Mofwazé,” a deeply personal project named after the Guadeloupean Creole word for “Metamorphosis.” The 2025 collection marks a pivotal moment in Zou’s career, reflecting his evolution both as a designer and as an individual. Drawing heavily on his Guadeloupean heritage and emotional experiences, “Mofwazé” serves as a narrative of his life—his fears, desires, and, most prominently, the admiration he holds for his mother.

The collection, composed of fifteen minimalist silhouettes, is characterized by its deconstructed architecture. Zou modernizes traditional suiting with avant-garde elements like headpieces and exaggerated jewelry, blending noble materials such as wool and leather with more accessible options like synthetic hair and chrome-plated brass. This juxtaposition of materials not only adds depth to the collection but highlights Zou’s desire to create fashion that is both luxurious and approachable.

Cultural heritage is a key inspiration in “Mofwazé,” with Antillean motifs playing a central role. Jewelry, a vital aspect of Caribbean identity, is reimagined in bold, oversized forms, including layered necklaces, large creole hoops, and “Tétés négresse” nipple jewelry—a nod to traditional Antillean styles. Zou also pays tribute to the significance of afro hair in the Caribbean community by incorporating synthetic hair into several designs, reflecting his pride in his cultural roots.

Zou’s collection introduces the “Fabien Zou woman,” a modern interpretation of the Antillean matador, traditionally a wealthy woman adorned in jewelry and layered petticoats. In “Mofwazé,” petticoats are reimagined as flared pants, corsets define waists, and afro hair becomes a statement feature. Each look conveys a sense of empowerment, blending historical references with modern silhouettes to create a new cultural narrative.

By merging his Antillean background with contemporary Western fashion, Fabien Zou’s “Mofwazé” collection offers a fresh perspective on cultural identity and self-expression. This collection is not only an exploration of his own metamorphosis but an invitation for others to embrace their individuality without fear of judgment. Through his thoughtful use of symbolism and materials, Zou redefines traditional Caribbean dress codes in a modern, global context, making “Mofwazé” a standout collection of Paris Fashion Week 2025.
