Molding Memories: The Personal Touch of PRUDE Ceramics’s Designs

In the heart of Brussels, a unique blend of cultural heritage, vivid memories, and artistic expression takes shape under the skilled hands of ceramist Diam Coly. PRUDE Ceramics, Diam’s creation, is a showcase of how creativity can bridge diverse worlds. Born in Paris in 1984 to a journalist mother and a DJ father, Diam’s early life was a rich blend of experiences from the stunning sceneries of the Himalayas to the rhythmic beats of jazz that resonated through her childhood.

After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in 2008, Diam embarked on a journey of self-exploration, examining their cultural roots and expressing them through the medium she felt most connected to: ceramics. Diam’s creations are not just mere objects; they are woven stories of her life and a reflection of her worldview.

The inception of PRUDE Ceramics stemmed from Diam’s commitment to using European materials, a choice reflecting her dedication to quality and environmental sustainability. This decision goes beyond artistic preference, illustrating the ceramist’s desire to positively impact the world through thoughtful handcrafted art.

Diam’s collection is deeply personal. Her first interaction with materials dates back to 1989 when, as a child, she was mesmerized by stones collected from a newspaper seller, captivated by their tangible richness. This early enticement to things laid the groundwork for her future endeavor in ceramic design.

PRUDE collection is a vibrant tribute to the 1980s – a decade renowned for its bold fashion statements, from oversized shoulder pads to vivid colors and dynamic patterns. Just as the 80s amplified physical presence, PRUDE amplifies cultural and personal identity. Each piece captures her childhood memories. embodying the essence of her childhood experiences and the creative boldness of the era that molded them. Mixed materials act as metaphors for the amalgamation of cultures, origins, and functions. Other pieces are more sculptural and artistic, yet deeply interconnected in the collection.

At the core, PRUDE was a desire to experiment with shapes and materials, challenging traditional practices to reveal something unique and captivating. This creative venture was a quest for identity, exploring themes of cross-cultural integration, diversity, and heritage. Diam’s work raises fundamental questions about self-identity: Who am I? Where do I come from? Are my traits innate or acquired?

PRUDE’s creative approach represents a migratory journey across different codes, statuses, and environments. It’s about crafting, shaping, and envisioning possibilities, facilitating a fluid conversation between the past and the present, the personal and the universal. Each piece is a reflection of Diam’s journey, blending their cultural heritage, memories, and artistic vision, offering a unique perspective on identity and diversity in the world of ceramics.
