The eyewear designer discusses communication and creative vision in the fashion industry

Since the 80s, Marie Wilkinson has been bringing flair and a unique vision to the eyewear industry. Having collaborated with numerous luxury brands— such as Paul Smith, Stella McCartney, and Maison Martin Margiela— and designed frames for celebrities such as Elton John, Wilkinson’s success story is attributed entirely to hard work and dedication.
At Montreal’s annual Festival De Mode & Design , in parallel with Montreal’s premiere destination for the latest eyewear fashions, Antoine Laoun Opticien’s, 10th anniversary, Wilkinson discussed her unconventional vision, and the approach that allowed for her to thrive within her industry, at a panel presented at the festival.
“The collaborations with independent designers always start with conversations. This way points of view and stories can be exchanged and then the synergy between us becomes apparent,” Wilkinson told Montrealgotstyle in a recent interview.
Wilkinson’s approach stemmed first and foremost from a desire to communicate and satisfy the customer.
“It’s important to understand the brand and the market you are designing for, as well as understanding the expectations of your boss and the extent of the skills of the factories you are working with. Take any opportunity you can to visit factories and talk to the technicians,” she said, further expressing the importance of fully understanding the industry in which you work.
