Alex S. Yu FW22 at Vancouver Fashion Week

Former Nancy Mak Award winner of 2014, Alex S. Yu is not on his first collection on the runway.

For his FW22 collection, shown at Vancouver Fashion Week, the young designer’s starts with the dizzying and hypnotic artworks of Paula Rego, which crackle with strange imagery and a sense of the beautiful grotesque. In a seemingly hopeful manner, the collection explores symbols, secrets, and the tranquil aftermath of betrayal and tragedy.

Capsule 002, called ” Welcome to the sad souls club” kept his colorful and minimal aesthetic and drew his inspiration from the well known Maddy Perez from HBO’s Euphoria, mixing dark leather with a strong feminine direction.

Capsule 002 begins with a black palette flecked with various textures, and tiny ribbons densely intertwined over the body. The remaining colour pallet includes purple, beige, matcha green, and sky blue. In the clothes, ALEX S. YU’s characteristic babydoll designs are coupled with a sense of ease and comfort. The line-up is dominated by original prints displaying a youthful image of a melancholy soul. Tulle, imitation leather, body-con knits, and cotton twill are among the fabrics used. The collection’s loose vibe is tied together by cutout details and skin-baring components.
