Between dreams and nightmares – Interview about Chloe Florence’s new EP, Dreamer’s Nightmare

Chloe Florence is one of those rare emerging artists, who not only is a sweet soul but has an absolutely beautiful voice. Written, composed, and produced in Montreal, her last EP, Dreamer’s Nightmare, came together through her sessions with her favorite companion since she was 7 years old; her piano.

Produced by Jordan Perry, the EP highlights soulful vocals with an eerie touch. The inspiration behind Dreamer’s Nightmare came mostly from her past relationship, but her main goal in this whole musical pursuit is to make people feel.

Because of the current lockdown, we were lucky enough to have this beautiful EP release show, right from our living room, with a complimentary diner and bottle of wine sent by Chloe. It felt like a truly special moment and were able to get some questions answered.

What message did you want to send people ?

I’m not trying to send a specific message, it’s mostly what I’m feeling and what I want to do in that moment. It’s about what I’m going through. I hope that whenever someone listens to my music, it can trigger whatever emotion it’s bringing out of you and make you feel.

What are the themes you wanted to express in your EP ?

On the broader scheme, the themes that mostly come out are self-confidence, introspection, and finding yourself, but I want people to find little things, other things in the music that I might have not thought of.

Why the words dreamer and nightmare ? They feel like antagonist words !

I’m a dreamer! I have big dreams, I am hopeful, and I have so many goals all the time. I’m an active person, and when I met this other person… I had this idea of a relationship, and I applied it to him, which wasn’t who he was. In the end, it was me, trying to fix this person, and I was never looking at myself and trying to grow on my own as an individual. While creating the songs, the words dreamers nightmare kept coming back to me

How has Covid-19 affected the launch ?

I’ve been working on this since past September and wanted to start touring to try getting my name out there. I wasn’t able to release the EP as fast as I could. It’s not too far from summer, it’s the fall! ( laughs ).
