Over the past year, working out at home has become the new normal due to the closure of gyms and fitness centers because of the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are currently working from home and staying indoors as much as possible, getting enough physical activity is important for your overall health and well-being. Studies show that not only is exercise good for your physical health, it can also help to boost your mental health and reduce your risk of depression, anxiety and stress during these uncertain times. Here are some ideas to consider if you’re struggling to motivate yourself to exercise at home.
Try an Activity You Enjoy
It’s always much easier to motivate yourself to exercise if you’re going to enjoy doing it. Instead of trying to get started with home workouts that don’t really get you very excited, consider what you’d actually like to do. If you normally enjoy playing golf, for example, a golf simulator is a great idea. You can easily set one up in your home and practice your golf skills without breaking quarantine rules.
Get into a Routine
It’s always easier to stick to working out at home if you’re in a good routine. Instead of trying to find the time to exercise when you know you’re going to be tired after a day of working or looking after your family, choose a time that you know you’re more likely to be feeling energetic and motivated in the day and stick to that time. If you normally have more energy in the mornings, working out first thing before you start your day is a good idea.
Have Some Fun
A home workout might never be exactly the same as the gym, but there are plenty of ways to make it fun and interesting. If you have a games console like an Xbox or PS4, there are plenty of fun games that you can play and work out with at the same time like dancing games for the Xbox Kinect or Beat Saber that you can play on PS4 VR from the comfort of your home.
Challenge Yourself
Finding the motivation to exercise is often easier for some people when they have something to work towards. The good news is that the world is unlikely to be shut down forever, and there will soon be a time where you will once again be able to participate in marathons, fun runs, and other sporting activities. Why not sign yourself up for one for next year, to give yourself something to work towards? Even better, you could do it to raise money for your favorite charity to give you an even bigger boost.
Work Out with Friends
Gym buddies don’t have to be a thing of the past just because gyms are temporarily closed. If you’re working out at home right now and your friends are in the same situation, you can get together virtually to work out together and keep each other motivated.
Get Outdoors
Many outdoor activities are off the cards, but if you’re struggling to work out at home because you’re tired of being indoors all the time, getting some exercise outdoors is important. Going for a walk, jog, run, or bike ride is quite safe despite the pandemic as long as you take care to social distance from other people. Not only is it a good way to get some exercise while getting out of the house, but the fresh air and sunshine can also boost your well-being.
Over the past year, working out at home has become more commonplace than ever. If you want to start working out at home but aren’t sure how to motivate
