NEITHAN HERBERT SS27: The Architecture of Dreams and the Return to Origins

Milan, late September. The atmosphere of Fashion Week holds a subtle, vibrant frenzy, but inside NEITHAN HERBERT’s official debut show on the Milan calendar, time suddenly stood still. Presented on Saturday, September 26, the Spring/Summer 2027 collection titled Está Anocheciendo en Mi Vida (Night Is Falling Over My Life) was not merely a runway show, but an intimate emotional pilgrimage. The Ecuadorian-born designer, raised in Mexico and returning to Milan six years after being a finalist at Milano Moda Graduate in 2020, built a space of pure aesthetic and cultural reflection in partnership with Michelle Francine Ngonmo’s Afro Fashion Association. The mood was imbued with a silent sanctity a thin boundary between wakefulness and dreaming where fashion strips away artifice to become a sanctuary.

Memory as Tailoring: Analysis of the Collection and the 32 Looks

The collection comprises 32 looks: 21 womenswear and 11 menswear sharing a common vocabulary of draping, transparency, elongated proportions, open backs, displaced collars, gathered surfaces, knots, and pleating. The garments appear caught in a suspended moment, lingering somewhere between being put on and coming undone. The deep inspiration stems from a primordial childhood memory: Neithan Herbert being carried on his mother Etelvina’s back, wrapped in a white cloth. From this emerges the defining trait of the pieces, which originate not from sleepwear, but from gestures of rest and care: covering the body, dragging fabric, holding a textile against the skin.

The color palette faithfully reproduces the fading light of dusk. It opens with the pure white of the maternal cloth and the last daylight, then warms into golden hues through hardware and metal elements that simulate lingering light as everything else fades. The range deepens progressively into burgundy and red, culminating in black, which grants density to the collection and heightens the dramatic contrast against sheer skin and metals.

Fabrics engage in a constant dualism of textures: lace and tulle erase the distance between body and viewer, chiffon provides immediate aerial fluidity, satin catches and releases light, while stiffer, structured taffeta shapes architectural volumes. Substantial and soft cashmere introduces a counterpoint of weight. At the center of it all is tailored construction: pleats formed one by one, hand-done smocking and gathering using needle and thread to build tension and volume. The imperfections of hand-detailing slight irregularities in tension and the tangible trace of craftsmanship are intentionally left visible, rejecting industrial uniformity. The San Miguel de Allende atelier, entirely staffed by women, crafts and finishes each garment directly on the body. Alongside textiles, hand-hammered brass shapes jewelry, hardware, and botanical or lunar forms that act as relics designed to outlive seasons.

Between Poetry and Ritual: Voices from Backstage and the Runway

The conceptual and narrative heart of the show unfolds through the designer’s own words and the poignant opening ritual. Recalling Hayden Herrera’s biography of Frida Kahlo, where he encountered the words “Está anocheciendo en mi vida”, Herbert named that crepuscular hour when the outlines of the visible world begin to loosen.

“Before I understood clothing as fashion, I understood it as shelter. The cloth moved with her body and folded around his. It was his first architecture.” – NEITHAN HERBERT

Bearing witness to this visceral bond, the show opened with a ritual performed by Etelvina, the designer’s mother, to music by Lido Pimienta. As she lets down her hair to prepare for rest, her grandson Dante removes her jewelry in a generational transfer of heritage and memory. Surrounded by atelier seamstresses who step in to finish her dress on her body, the boundary between backstage and runway dissolves. A beauty installation curated by Medicube as Official Skincare Partner, featuring makeup by Marco Castro and hair by Claire Moore, translated this state of transition toward sleep onto faces and hair, lulled by Jacob Olofsson’s (Olovson) soundscape.

Critical and Cultural Depth

Placing NEITHAN HERBERT within the contemporary fashion landscape means recognizing the value of effortless luxury rooted in Latin American craft, blending softness and structure, minimal and maximal. Under the creative direction of Neithan Herbert and business leadership of co-founder Anga Ruiz whose academic work focuses on empowering indigenous communitiesthe brand puts forward an ethical and sustainable model anchored in limited production and material research.

Culturally, the collection engages with the nomadic figure: an individual in motion carrying memory from one territory to another. This return to Milan bolstered by an excellence-driven team including stylist Stephania Yepes, casting directors Ignacio Murillo and Morgan Senesi, creative consultant Carlos Castellanos, and spatial directors OFFCOLL Officina Collettiva reaffirms fashion not merely as an industry, but as a medium for cultural preservation, identity, and emotional resilience.

Conclusion

Está Anocheciendo en Mi Vida ends between gravity and flight, leaving the body anchored to the earth while the spirit travels freely. In the contemporary fashion landscape dominated by digital speed, Neithan Herbert demonstrates that the future of the wardrobe lies in the capacity to preserve the past through manual care. This collection not only celebrates the brand’s official debut on the Milan calendar, but seals a journey where clothing returns to being what it was always meant to be: a primordial form of shelter, a bridge between generations, and a sanctuary for the soul
