Kendall arrived last January in Aspen and went back to 1996. Meanwhile, Rihanna had never really left 1998.
When you travel to Aspen during the month of January you’ll see what type of outfits are popular this year as well as what fur goes with it. Name any high end brand in Europe that sells a coat and I’m sure you’ll find someone wearing it around the city during high season. Two of the best-known women on the planet decided to arrive in Aspen last winter wearing two completely opposite looks of what that coat should look like.
Kendall Jenner took it back to the early days. She first stepped out in a black coat that came down mid thigh and paired it with a large round brown fur hat. Days later we saw her step out in a black suede jacket and a longer skirt that both had fur lined on them. If you’re an enthusiast of vintage fashion you’d instantly know where she got that fit. It’s from Tom Ford’s fall 1996 line for Gucci. She wore them as if she’d pulled them from her closet in the morning (which, for all we know, she probably had).
Where Hailey Bieber gave us a newer option. She was recently seen in Aspen sporting a over sized shaggy fur coat that came down to the floor length. Priced at $15,800 it definitely caused hype and rightfully so. But what does a vintage coat have that these newer lines don’t?
There is definitely an argument for why Kendall does this. The garment itself has lasted almost 30 years so what more can you say about it compared to a new coat. It has been worn, packed away, carried over many fashion trends and evolutions. Worn by a woman that can wear whatever she pleases at any time.
Rihanna has also showed us that she loves timeless pieces. She’s worn many furs throughout her career but one she keeps coming back to is her John Galliano Fall 1998 line.
The line was held in the Metropolitan Club in New York City and was inspired by the 1920’s. This style has remained longer than any other. You know there are plenty of people that would have thrown this away by now. Rihanna keeps wearing it like its current season. Not that she doesn’t have other furs to wear but for some reason she just has to go back to this coat. It’s been around for 28 years.
Why fur out lasts everything else.
Rihanna is making us question what else in your wardrobe can you say that about. Take your wool coat from 1998 and chances are you’re already thinking what you’re going to find. Flat shoulders and pill under your arms. Leather coats can take some damage as well when they’re from that era. Hardly anything from the late 90’s are in condition that you’d want to wear outside of your house. But when you find those pieces it’s almost always fur. Because fur is not woven. It’s not cut from fabric. The process of cutting a fur takes a lot of time because they match colors, characteristics and types of the fur. Whether its mink, sable or fox they are matched and cut accordingly. So when your looking at two coats that may look the same price can vary greatly. Why? Because they’re better matched. Meaning more hours worked on. They are trying to build these garments to last many years and years. And if done correctly they will.
What the fur-tur holds
Fur coats when made right are made to last you for many years to come. We can already assume that Rihanna’s coat is going to last. We can only go off that it’s lasted this many seasons and will last years more. It is one of those pieces that one day she’ll pull off of a shelf and throw it over her clothes and still look good.
