Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound from the cannabis plant. Over the years, CBD has become popular for its therapeutic benefits. It is effective in treating various medical conditions. However, CBD has benefits and side effects like any other medication. Here are a few benefits of cannabidiol.

  1. Pain Relief

CBD effectively reduces pain caused by arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other chronic conditions. It works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate pain. Specifically, CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. They are located throughout the body and are involved in regulating pain perception. By interacting with these receptors, CBD can reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Studies show that CBD can improve sleep in patients with chronic pain. It can also improve mobility in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

  1. Anxiety and Depression

CBD can reduce anxiety and depression. It interacts with the serotonin receptors in the brain, regulating mood and social behavior. It can increase serotonin levels in the brain, reducing anxiety and improving mood. Research suggests that CBD can reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder. It can also reduce depression in patients with bipolar disorder.

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Properties

You can use CBD to reduce inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce inflammation or swelling from rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help with inflammation from Crohn’s disease and multiple sclerosis. CBD interacts with the immune system, which plays a role in regulating inflammation. CBD drug testing usually turns negative as tests look for THC. Therefore, it is easy to abuse. If you are unsure of the correct dosage to treat inflammation, seek your doctor’s opinion.

  1. Neuroprotective Properties

The neuroprotective properties of CBD can protect the brain from the effects of stroke or Alzheimer’s. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates brain function. Studies have shown that CBD can protect the brain from damage. It can improve neurological function.

  1. Epilepsy

Some studies show that CBD can treat epilepsy. The FDA has approved a CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, for treating epilepsy. It works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates seizure activity.

The Side Effects of Cannabidiol

Like any other medication, cannabidiol has a few side effects. However, they are minor and don’t last long. You should seek your doctor’s help if you experience adverse side effects. Here are some side effects you may experience.

Fatigue and Drowsiness

Many people take CBD to treat insomnia. While it is effective, CBD makes you feel tired  during the day. This is particularly true if you take high doses of CBD. It may also happen if you take it with other medications.

Dry Mouth

CBD can decrease saliva production, leaving your mouth dry and sticky. This can be particularly uncomfortable if you already suffer from dry mouth due to a medical condition or medication.

Changes In Blood Pressure

CBD can lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that it can temporarily increase blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, speak with your doctor before taking CBD.

Interaction With Medication

CBD can interact with other medications you are taking. This is particularly true for medications that are metabolized by the liver. CBD can inhibit the activity of certain enzymes that are responsible for breaking down these medications. It can increase the concentration of medication in your bloodstream.

Gastrointestinal Distress

CBD can cause gastrointestinal distress. This may include nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. These side effects are common if you take high CBD doses.

While CBD has many benefits, you should know the potential side effects before taking it. If it could benefit your health, speak with your doctor and determine if it is safe and appropriate. If you experience side effects, stop taking CBD and seek help.
