Zhuoran (Linda) Wang’s designs are woven with memory of her evolving relationship with family, identity, and the passage of time. Born in China, educated in Canada, and now based in New York, Wang’s journey across cultures has shaped her artistic vision, allowing her to explore the universal themes of connection and change. A finalist in the Balenciaga External Project in collaboration with the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, Wang approaches design with quiet yet profound sensibility, crafting pieces that are both intimate and universal.

Her latest collection, Soft Cage, delves into the intricacies of familial relationships, exploring how time and experience shape the dynamic between parents and children, where garments serve as a metaphor for the tension between structure and freedom, tradition and growth.

Inspired by deeply personal memories—horseback riding harnesses that symbolized guidance and restraint, childhood whistles that echoed moments of fleeting communication—Soft Cage captures the duality of family life. It delves into how different generations perceive time: the stretched, lingering moments of youth contrasted with the accelerating pace of adulthood.

“All moments exist for but a moment,” she muses, encapsulating the fleeting yet profound nature of time.

She speaks of her mother’s expectations—firm yet nurturing—and of the tension between control and freedom, expressed in the interplay of rigid wire knits against fluid fabric drapes. “The wire represents the discipline and structure I grew up with, yet it is also pliable, capable of bending to new forms,” Wang explains. This juxtaposition runs through the collection, where garments are carefully balanced between comfort and restraint, echoing the emotional complexity of growing up under the weight of familial expectations.

“Over time, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of blending these differences, which has shaped my approach to design. To me, good design isn’t one-dimensional—it’s layered, and enriched with inspirations and concepts from diverse places. Growing up and living in such varied environments have given me the perspective and sensitivity needed to weave those layers together, creating something truly unique and meaningful.”

Her creative process is a meditation on these shifting perceptions, balancing nostalgia with a forward-looking sensibility.

A Delicate Balance of Creativity and Practicality

Wang’s design ethos is rooted in practicality, driven by a simple yet profound question: How will this be cleaned? This consideration ensures her pieces are not only artful but also sustainable and functional, designed with the realities of everyday life in mind.

The materials and techniques she employs reflect her fascination with the tension between control and adaptability. Wire knitting, enzyme denim washing, and reconstructed vintage garments create garments that are at once structured and fluid—mirroring the evolving dynamics of adolescence and parental influence. “The wire represents the discipline and structure I grew up with, yet it is also pliable, capable of bending to new forms,” Wang explains.

Her pattern-making techniques—such as hems transitioning seamlessly into sleeves—symbolize the enduring ties between generations. “These design details reflect the connections that endure between us, even as we grow and change,” she explains.

Beyond the technical aspects, Wang sees clothing as an emotional extension of the wearer—a bridge between past experiences and future possibilities. Each thread and pattern is deliberately chosen to evoke a sense of familiarity while inviting new interpretations. The act of wearing Soft Cage becomes an intimate dialogue between personal history and self-expression, offering both comfort and a quiet strength.

Crafting Across Cultures

Having lived across continents, Wang’s perspective is shaped by a fusion of Eastern and Western influences. She describes herself as a “floater,” someone who navigates between cultural landscapes with an openness that informs her work.

“My designs are a dialogue,” she reflects. “They are not bound by one culture or idea but rather layers of experiences that come together naturally.”

This unique global perspective allows her to create pieces that feel at once deeply personal and widely relatable. Drawing from her Chinese heritage and Western experiences, Wang’s work embodies an aesthetic that respects tradition yet embraces modernity. It is in this balancing act that she finds her creative voice—one that resonates with audiences across cultures and generations.

Wang’s work serves as a bridge between the past and present, blending ancient techniques with modern silhouettes. Her reverence for traditional craftsmanship—whether through intricate knitting methods or hand-finished details—is complemented by a contemporary sensibility that speaks to the needs of today’s wearer. This fusion of influences is what gives Soft Cage its universal appeal, making it more an evolving conversation about heritage, identity, and transformation.

From the Archives to Aoyama

Wang’s experience as a finalist in the Balenciaga External Project provided her with an invaluable education in garment construction and meticulous attention to detail. “We had the rare chance to see some of Balenciaga’s most iconic archive pieces in person,” she recalls. “Standing inches away from those garments, I realized how every detail—no matter how small—played a role in the overall silhouette.”

This experience sharpened her understanding of precision and fueled her commitment to creating pieces that feel both intentional and intuitive. It’s a philosophy that will come to life in her upcoming showroom launch in Aoyama, Tokyo—a milestone that signifies her growing presence on the global stage.

“This launch feels like a full-circle moment,” she says. “Bringing my work to a region that has deeply influenced my design philosophy and connecting with an audience that values craftsmanship and innovation is incredibly exciting.” Her upcoming showroom debut in Aoyama, Tokyo, indeed marks a pivotal chapter. This launch represents more than a career milestone; it’s a dialogue with a culture that deeply resonates with her design ethos.

Conclusion

Ultimately, Soft Cage is a love letter—an homage to growth, memory, and the ever-evolving nature of family. With this collection, Wang stands at the intersection of past and future, crafting pieces that feel both deeply personal and universally resonant. As she prepares to unveil Soft Cage to the world, it becomes clear that her designs are vessels of meaning, carrying stories of discipline, love, and transformation.
