Everyone loves to travel, but you only get the chance to expand your horizons every so often. Which is why it’s so important to make the most out of every trip you go on. And, the best way to make the most out of a vacation is to hit multiple destinations at once. With a multi-city trip, you get to cross multiple cities off your bucket list on one go.

However, as great as a multi-city trip is, planning it is not so easy. You have to plan multiple accommodations, activities, and restaurants. Not to mention how you’re going to get to each place. Will you drive, fly, or take a bus? Planning any trip is complicated, but especially when you want to hit multiple cities at once. If you’re thinking of treating yourself to a much needed vacation but aren’t sure where to start, check out these 4 tips to planning a multi-city trip.

1. Choose Your Destinations

First and foremost, you want to choose your destinations. You can’t plan a multi-city trip unless you know exactly where you want to go. If you aren’t sure where to start, just think of a couple of cities you’ve been itching to visit. Do you want to see the west coast? Or go on a tour of the east? Or, do you want to see the middle of the country? Before you can get into the details of your trip, make a list of exactly every city you want to stop at. You can use a travel planner to help you get started.

2. Figure Out Transportation

The biggest issue you will probably face when embarking on a multi-city trip is transportation. Getting from point A to point B will take some planning. Do you need to rent a car or will you get there by train? These are all things you need to think about when planning the trip. If you’re thinking about flying, try to secure affordable airfare. For example, you can easily find cheap airfare from Portland, Oregon to Dallas, Texas for under $300 roundtrip. Saving money on your airfare will open up your budget for other things.

3. Plan Your Itinerary

Once you’ve figured out the places you want to go and how you’re going to get there, then you can get started on actually planning your itinerary. That means choosing places to stay, restaurants to eat at, and sights to see. You probably will have limited time in each city, so it’s important to plan ahead so that you can squeeze everything you want to do into your schedule.

For example, if you’re traveling to New York City, you should carefully plan for all the New York museums you want to go to. That way, you will be sure to hit everything on your list. If you’re working with a budget, using a vacation budget calculator can also help with planning.

4. Pack Light

Since going on a multi-city trip means being constantly on the move, you want to pack as light as possible. Whether you’re traveling via plane or car, it’s not easy to get around with heavy luggage. Plus, you can still look stylish while traveling with a light suitcase. The less stuff you have to carry with you, the easier it’s going to be to get around.

Going on a multi-city trip is exciting. You get to experience various cities in one go, but planning the trip can be overwhelming. Which is why it’s so important to plan ahead of time. The more you prepare for the trip, the smoother it will go. Take some time to read up on these travel tips and your multi-city trip will go better than you ever expected.
