If you’re looking to design a home for a lifetime, then you need to make sure that every room is able to do its job effectively. Of course, every room is also going to experience wear and tear over time and, eventually, you’re going to have to look at making some major upgrades, replacements, or repairs. Here, we’re going to look at some of the upgrades you might need to make to the bathroom to ensure that it, too, is doing its job effectively.
Do you really need a bath anymore?
It’s a question that a lot of people find themselves in, especially if they have a bathroom with a shower head hanging over it. If you’re not using the bath, then how much work will it take to replace it with a shower cubicle? Sometimes, the answer isn’t as pricy or as extensive as you think. Shower cubicles can be bought in whole, and many times you just have to reroute a new drain into your already existing bath drainage, before tiling over the area where the bath used to be. It’s not exactly the cheapest project to take on, but a walk-in shower is a much more practical option for those people who rarely if ever, take a dip in their own bath.
Improving your toilet
You might think that there isn’t too much to be done to improve the experience of your toilet, but you might be mistaken. If you’re using an old inefficient model then switching to a low-flow toilet can help you save a lot of water. A lot of modern toilets come with hidden tank options, as well, which can save space, too, and make your toilet take up a lot less visual real estate in the bathroom. You might even want to go a little further and opt for a toilet and bidet combo. Bidets are becoming a lot more popular, after all, thanks to their hygiene improvements, and it’s one way to add a real modern luxury sensation to the room.
Up your lighting game
Not all of the changes you can make to the bathroom are specifically down to the appliances that you use in there, either. The feeling and vibe that the room gives off are just as important. Improving your lighting can be great for doing just that, as well as adding some practical visibility, which can make the bathroom easier to use and safer. Layering your lighting fixtures so that you can get some ambient and task lighting to reach the places that your main light fixture alone won’t reach might be a good idea. Or you may want to look at ideas that maximize natural light, such as replacing heavy window curtains with lighter blinds and using frosted glass to allow light in while maintaining privacy.
Check on the plumbing, too
If you’re taking the time to look over your bathroom, then you might want to also take a closer look at the plumbing that actually makes it all tick. Over the years, pipes can become worn down due to corrosion, leaks, blockages, and the like. A closer look could highlight some issues that, if not tackled now, could become a lot more expensive and a lot messier in the future. It doesn’t take a lot of work to buy a length of copper tube and have someone replace the piping in your bathroom where it’s necessary. But it’s a replacement that could ensure that you don’t have any major plumbing problems in the next few years at least.
Improving your airflow
It’s not just the water that you want to keep moving in your bathroom. You want to keep the air moving, too, especially if you have a shower or take hot baths in there. Aside from worsening the air quality, having poor airflow also means that hot and moist air is going to rise to the top of the room, sticking to the ceiling where it can cause mould to grow. Naturally, you want to avoid this. You should take a look at what you can do to improve airflow, whether it’s by replacing or installing a new extractor fan or by otherwise improving the quality of air with things like a dehumidifier.
With the tips above, you can take a closer look at where your bathroom might be most due for an upgrade or even a little bit of maintenance to ensure that it’s able to meet the needs of modern living. A little renovation in the bathroom can make it feel like a luxury experience.
